WHY WE HOST THIS SITE
BearCentral.ca is a blog hosted by Vista Publishing and Stan and Marlene Walchuk. They share a belief with many that bear/human relations can be interesting, entertaining, and more important, that bears as predators need to be more clearly understood and more honestly portrayed to the public. Recent studies using cameras attached to bears have documented individual bears killing about one calf moose a day during the spring season – some bears killing more than thirty calf moose per month. Contemporary grizzly bear population studies using DNA from hair samples have shown, in some areas, bear numbers 3 to 4 times greater than indicated in earlier studies. Confrontations, property damage, and mauling’s have been on the increase since the 1960’s. With the loss of hunting and increase in human populations, there is no reason to believe that there will be fewer confrontations or less predation on moose, caribou, and elk in the future - increased predation on populations that are already stressed or threatened in many areas.
